Hairline cracks, stress cracks or spider cracks can occur in the gelcoat surfaces of fiberglass boats or many other water craft and are often seen as a cosmetic issue. In most cases this is true, however it is important to seal them correctly otherwise water could penetrate into the fiberglass and cause more serious damage. Most stress cracks occur in the gelcoat layer of fiberglass surfaces and can be repaired quickly. If structural damage is suspected, we will inspect the hull thoroughly for any moisture damage that could have damaged the structure of your boat. 

These problems occur as a result of:

• Stress and Movement (hence the term Stress Crack)
• Manufacturing issues
• Environmental challenges

HOW TO AVOID GELCOAT STRESS CRACKS?

Spider cracks can be avoided by countersinking holes just through the gelcoat, so the load is placed on the structural fiberglass rather than the brittle gelcoat. Quite often however, it’s near impossible to prevent these unsightly cracks due to the fact gelcoat is so brittle and rigid.

The outer surface of a fiberglass boat is normally a resin called gelcoat. Gelcoat acts like paint which protects the hull and gives it its color and shine. The ultra high gloss most new boats exhibit is due entirely to the highly polished, mirror-like surface of the mold used in the original construction of the boat.

Time and exposure to the elements can eventually erode the relatively soft surface of gelcoat, leaving it dull and chalky. Fortunately, the gloss usually can be restored.
